About Barbados - Destination Guide

General Information

If you're thinking of visiting us and have never been before, here is some information to guide you and get you clued-up!

Our beautiful island is divided into 11 parishes. The terrain and vegetation change dramatically as you wander from one to the other, and so do the pace and ambience. Bridgetown, the capital, is a rather modern and sophisticated city. West Coast resorts and private homes ooze luxury, whereas the small villages and vast sugar plantations found throughout central Barbados mark the island's history. The South Coast is renowned for its' liveliness and fabulous beaches. You will find shops, bars and restaurants all along the coast, not to mention St Lawrence Gap, the famous night strip with a range of restaurants serving Mexican, Italian, Seafood and of course Bajan food! The heavy surf of the Atlantic Ocean has designed the cliffs of the remote East Coast; the northeast is called Scotland, because that's what its hilly landscape resembles.

Barbadians (Bajans) are a warm, friendly, and hospitable people who are genuinely proud of their country and culture and welcome visitors as privileged guests. The business community is sophisticated, and the government is stable, so life here continues after the tourists pack up their sun oils and return home. Most of the 260,000 Bajans live in the area around the capital city of Bridgetown, on the southwest coast, or along the west coast as far as Speightstown in the north and Oistins in the south. Others reside in tiny hamlets in the island's 11 parishes.

Barbados retains a noticeable British atmosphere, with place names such as Worthing, Hastings and Brighton. Most Bajans are members of the Anglican church, afternoon tea is a ritual, cricket is the national sport and polo, "the sport of kings," is played all winter. The tradition of dressing for dinner is firmly entrenched, yet the island's atmosphere is hardly stuffy. You can dine by candlelight facing the sea, in festive company at a sumptuous Bajan buffet, or casually with a burger at the beach!

Sounds like paradise ?? It is, so what are you waiting for!!
